MILO MANARA | UMBERTO ECO

The exhibition, which celebrates the dialogue between literature, cinema and the ninth art, is open until 2 September 2026.Two venues have been chosen to pay tribute to the novel that Umberto Eco published in 1980, which was subsequently adapted for the cinema by Jean-Jacques Annaud in 1986 and adapted into a comic strip by Milo Manara in two volumes published by La Nave di Teseo in 2023 and 2025.The Centre Culturel Les Arsenaux is dedicated to the film, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. It houses the film’s original materials, drawn from the collection of the Fondation Fellini pour le cinéma: photos from the shoot, props, scripts and models of abbeys; as well as a number of medieval manuscripts held at the Valais State Archives.
The Espace culturel de la Maison du diable is hosting ‘Milo Manara | Umberto Eco, The Name of the Rose. On display are around forty original drawings by the artist, alongside documents provided by the Umberto Eco Foundation – the exhibition’s cultural partner – including several drawings relating to the novel. In the crypt of the Maison du diable, the documentary film on Umberto Eco, directed by Reinhold Jaretzky for Arte in 2007 – Einmal einen Mönch vergiften – Umberto Eco, also known as Mi andava di uccidere un monaco – Umberto Eco– is being screened for the public.

The exhibition opening was attended not only by officials from the Canton, the City and the Borghesia of Sion, but also by the President of the Fondation Fellini pour le cinéma, Stéphane Marti, and his colleague Federico Grandesso, Milo Manara with Claudio Curcio, his agent and president of Comicon; the director Reinhold Jaretzky; and, representing the Umberto Eco Foundation, Filomena Caranci, who is responsible for the coordination, analysis and review of the archive.
